Reagan, John H., Monument

Reagan Park;vicinity of Park and Crockett Sts., Palestine, TX

In 1911 Palestine's citizens dedicated the John H. Reagan Monument to honor one of their most illustrious dignitaries. Drawing from the aesthetics of early 20th century classical artistic expression, noted sculptor Pompeo Coppini incorporated both representational and allegorical figures into this homage. As a tribute to both an honored citizen and the revered heritage of the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy," the monument's significance falls within the guidelines established by Criteria Consideration F for commemorative properties. While not directly associated with his productive life, the monument suggests the assessment of Reagan's life and the symbolic importance of the Civil War made by successive generations. As an expression of early 20th century cultural values, the monument is therefore eligible at the local level of significance.
