This highway overlooks the original route of the historic road between Mora and Las Vegas. On January 24, 1847, a United States military force from Las Vegas marched through here and fought a fierce battle with residents who had revolted against the American occupation of New Mexico. On February 1, American forces returned and completely leveled the original plaza of Mora.
