Castaño de Sosa’s Route (2)

In 1590-91, Gaspar Castaño de Sosa led an expedition in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony in New Mexico. During the winter of 1590, as he pushed north along the Pecos River, the group passed along this route in the vicinity of present-day Artesia and Roswell.

The state's landscape is diverse and includes deserts, mountains, and forests. It is home to several national parks and monuments, including Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the White Sands National Monument.
