Wheeler Peak

Across Moreno Valley to the west stands Wheeler Peak named for Lt. George Montegue Wheeler, a military surveyor. At 13,161 feet, it is the highest peak in New Mexico. The peak and the Taos Range are composed of Precambrian granite and gneiss. Moreno Valley is underlain by soft sandstones and shales, which are covered by stream and glacial deposits.
