House by the Side of the Road

"The House by the side of the Road" is a li-story, 5-bay center/hall structure-- an excellent example of the late 18th-century cape. Its massing and fenestration are typical of rural residences throughout New Hampshire, The door treatment, which dates from a subsequent era, indicates changing technology and taste in architecture.

In addition to its architectural merit, however, the house has the added distinction of being connected with Sam Walter Foss - journalist, poet, and librarian. Foss boarded here while attending Tilton Seminary in 1877-78. The house has been known as the "House by the side of the Road" since the late 1890s after the publication of Foss's famous poem in 1897. It continues to be an important local landmark in the Tilton area.
