Site bought by B.B. Boone, G.W. Williams and W.P Curlee from Chickasaw Le-Ho-Yea. Named for pioneer R.H. Boone, a descendant of Daniel Boone. Chartered 1873 and made co. seat of newly formed Prentiss County.

The state has a diverse population that includes Native American tribes such as the Choctaw and Chickasaw, as well as African Americans, European Americans, and Hispanic Americans.
