Georgia Davis Powers
Historical marker location:GEORGIA DAVIS POWERS Sen. Georgia Davis Powers, first woman and first African American elected to the Kentucky Senate, was born here in 1923. Elected to State Senate from Louisville in 1967, Powers served five, four-year terms and advanced legislation on public accommodations, fair employment, open housing and other issues that affected women, children, and the poor.
GEORGIA DAVIS POWERS Senator Powers’ career began before she was elected and continued after she left office in 1989. As a younger woman, she was active in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and civil rights protests. In her later years, she wrote books and spoke at community events, such as Springfield’s Annual African American Festival.
