Governor from Warsaw


Birthplace of Richard Yates, 1818. In Illinois legislature for three terms; U.S. Congress, 1851-55. As Governor of Illinois, 1861-65, he vigorously supported Lincoln and state exceeded the call for volunteers. Member of U.S. Senate, 1865-71. Delegate to conventions that nominated Lincoln and Grant for President. Yates died 1873. A son Illinois Governor, 1901-04.
