Library East

Murphree Way, Gainesville, FL

Library East is historically significant in the development of the University of Florida as the first library building to be constructed on campus. It represents the University's first major commitment to the accumulation of printed materials for scholarly examination necessary as the foundation of the true university.

The original portion of the present Library East structure was designed in late 1923. The building was not occupied until the spring of 1925, due to delays arising from a need to modify the design in order to bring it into line with rising construction costs.

Library East has experienced organic growth, in which the chief factors have been the availability of funds and the enlargement of the university. A stacked area with a 128,000 volume capacity was added in 1931," and additions which more than doubled the size of the structure were constructed in 1949.
