Historical marker location:

( Marker is at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest and 14th Street Northwest (Highway 1), on the right when traveling west on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest.)

Erected 1901.

The District was originally much larger: The District of Columbia originally included land from both Maryland and Virginia, but in 1846, the portion of the District that had been taken from Virginia was returned to the state.
