Sheppard Cottage

E. Barbour St., Eufaula, AL

The Sheppard Cottage is the oldest residence in Eufaula, a riverfront city with dozens of antebellum landmarks. It is one of Alabama's better examples of a southern adaptation of a Cape Cod cottage.

Built by Henry H. and Mary R. Field in 1837, it was sold to Mariah A. Snipes who lived in it for five years before recording the deed on August 23, 1847. This was possibly due to the fact that the deed was not recorded until the home was paid for.

In this deed the Fields reserved 10 square feet in the middle of the lot which encompassed the graves of their daughter and her child. These gravestones were removed in the 1940's. On December 4, 1858, Mariah Snipes
willed house and lot to John Dewitt Snipes.

In 1868 W. P. Sheppard deeded this property to Dr. Edmund Sheppard, a physician who settled in the area in the 1830's. Dr. Sheppard served in the Confederate army, and later operated a smallpox hospital. The Sheppard Cottage was given to the Eufaula Heritage Association by Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Lunsford. The cottage is located in a downtown area of Eufaula on the main thoroughfare from the Bluff City to Georgetown, Georgia. It is currently being used as the offices of the Chamber of Commerce.
