Richardson-Griggs Cemetery

Location: Driving Directions:From SH 7 just east of Kennard, go 4.7 miles south on CR 4700. Turn right at driveway that is lined with Crape Myrtles on east side and go approx. 0.1 mile south to house. From house walk approx. 904 ft. due west following tree line to small pond. Cross dam and then walk north along edge of pond. Unmarked cemetery is located at northwestern corner of small pond approx. 0.15 mile south of road.This cemetery is highly endangered. It is not a map feature, and there are no cemetery signs posted. It is not fenced or maintained, and all cemetery features are missing. It is reported that there are at least 18 graves, which were marked at one time. However, no graves are evident now. Currently, the cemetery is used for pasturage.Note: The Latitude/Longitude and cemetery boundaries in this form are approximate. This information is based solely on eyewitness testimony. No physical traces of this cemetery existed when this survey was conducted.

To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.

The Historic Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.

A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or agency may submit a request for designation.
