Location: Driving Directions:From FM 229/FM 2544 junction near Lake Houston, go 2.0 miles west on FM 2544. Turn left at CR 2230 and go 0.5 mile south. Turn left onto private, gated road that leads into J. B. Hunting Club and go approx. 0.2 mile north-east. This cemetery is a map feature. It is fully fenced and active, and it appears to be seasonally maintained. At the time of the survey, tall grass and heavy overgrowth obscured many of the graves and grave markers. The cemetery is located on private property. In order to access the cemetery one must go through a locked gate and travel approx. 0.2 mile on a private road. The cemetery is fully fenced, but sections have been damaged (by logging?), and the entry gate was open during the survey. The cemetery has a diverse collection of markers, including: formal, homemade, locally cast, metal funeral, and fieldstone markers. The cemetery appears to be frequently visited. Recent floral decorations were observed on several graves. The most recent burials occurred within the last couple of years. Note: cemetery is called Mt. Zion on USGS topographic maps.
To address the problem of cemetery destruction and to record as many cemeteries as possible, the
Texas Historical Commission offers the Historic Texas Cemetery designation.
The Historic
Texas Cemetery designation was developed in 1998 to help protect historic cemeteries by
recording cemetery boundaries in county deed records to alert present and future owners of land adjacent
to the cemetery of its existence. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic
Texas Cemetery through this program. The HTC designation is the first step toward preservation of a historic cemetery.
A cemetery is eligible for designation if it is at least 50 years old and is deemed worthy of recognition
for its historical associations. The very nature of a cemetery being a landmark of a family’s or community’s
presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. Any individual, organization, or
agency may submit a request for designation.
