First Callahan Building

276 Lisbon St., Lewiston, ME

The historical importance of this building is in conjunction with its neighbor to the south as part of a large development undertaken by the Callahan brothers. T.F. and Eugene Callahan were dealers in trunks, hats, and gents furnishings and their success can be measured in the construction of this building in 1892, and in the adjoining structure in 1910-11. Both are large four-story brick buildings with Renaissance-inspired styling. The first Callahan Block was designed by George Coombs, an important architect who had the largest practice in western Maine. Coomb's death in 1909 left his son and partner, Eugene Gibbs, to design the second Callahan Block.
